Economies of scale are, according to some ship operators, becoming harder to realise as ships get larger. So the economies of scale of a 10,000TEU ship over an 8,000TEU vessel are comparatively greater than the economies of scale achieved by a 12,000TEU boxship compared to its 10,000TEU predecessor. That is the economies are reduced as the ships get bigger. It is expected that the trend will continue with the next generation of container vessels, which are now on the drawing board. However, the succeeding vessels, one of which is currently being designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), will leap up in size from 18,000 to 22,000TEU, a more than 22% capacity increase, significantly greater than the 10.3% increase from the 14,500TEU vessels, of the new post panamaxes, when the 16,000TEU Emma Maersk was launched in 2006.
