MacGregor packages bound for new Thai drilling rigs

Cargotec subsidiary MacGregor is to supply electrically powered, eight-point mooring systems to a pair of new tender assist drilling rigs, currently under construction at China Merchants Heavy Industry on behalf of Thailand's Mermaid Maritime. Each rig will be fitted with a MacGregor system featuring a line pull rating of 95tonnes, a 460tonne brake holding capacity and a 1,400m × 64mm-diameter wire drum capacity. "The electric winches have variable frequency drives, which consume around 20-30% less energy when compared to hydraulically driven winches," states Francis Wong, MacGregor Offshore vice president for segment sales. "This advantage will significantly reduce the carbon footprint and bring down the initial installation and operation cost." The system packages will be delivered to China Merchants Heavy Industry in June next year, with the rigs set to be completed and delivered in 2016.
