India's first domestically constructed carrier launched

In August 2013, the first domestically constructed carrier, Vikrant, built under Project 71 (P-71), was launched; then, in November, it took delivery of the long-delayed Russian-built carrier Vikramaditya (ex-Admiral Gorshkov) under Project 11430. It continues to work on a large carrier design and, in the meantime, will continue to operate the elderly light carrier Viraat (ex-HMS Hermes) with its air wing of the ageing but upgraded Sea Harriers fighters and a mix of helicopters, until Vikrant enters service by 2018 or thereabouts.
