Algeria's Navy on course for growth

In parallel with a number of newbuilding programmes for the Algerian Navy, a number of major upgrade projects for Russian origin surface combatants - including Koni- and Nanuchka-class corvettes - as well the upgrade of two British-built amphibious warfare ships by Spain's Navantia, are also underway. The first of two Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) MEKO 200 frigates for the Algerian Navy that are being built at ADM Kiel shipyard in Kiel, Germany entered the water in late September 2014, according to German press reports. The frigates are being built using the well-known MEKO (modular construction method) from several large, pre-outfitted blocks.
