Ari Sipilae, from Kvaerner Masa-Yards, recently told his audience at last year's Gastech 98 Conference about proposals for a new economic design of LNG tanker that could also perhaps be powered by diesel engines. The transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by sea has changed little during the last 30 years. Highly sophisticated ships with very specialised cargo containment systems have successfully transported many trillions of cubic metres of methane and ethane around the world, but construction and operating costs have been high. To try and overcome some of these difficulties, Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Finland now offers an alternative solution, details of which were presented by Mr Ari Sipilae at the recent Gastech 98 Conference.
