Battery technology is not only attracting more users within fields such as local and short-haul ferries, which together with offshore support vessels have hitherto been its main applications, but is also extending its market reach into new areas. Overall, whether in hybrid installations or all-electric plant, specification of battery packs has accelerated, exceeding earlier forecasts. The forthcoming delivery of the first of four Suezmax-size shuttle tankers ordered by the Teekay Group denotes an important stage in the take-up of energy storage systems (ESS), providing a showcase for batteries in the large merchant ship domain. Constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries and destined for contract of affreightment (COA) work in the North Sea, the 125,000dwt Aurora Spirit leads the E-Shuttle Tanker generation developed by the shipowner in cooperation with Waertsilae.
