Human factors - increasing importance in ship design

Patrick Carnie, an enthusiastic believer in this new technique, analyses RINA's first conference on this subject, held last September, and predicts that it will open new vistas for many.rnIn September last year, RINA organised its first Human Factors conference. The RINA conference department received a record number of submissions - 70 proposals for what was originally going to be a one-and-a-half-day conference (a short preview appeared in The Naval Architect March 2000, page 22). The delegates, from 12 countries, said it had been a great success, and there was a clear mandate for another conference in a year or two's time. This report attempts to describe the conference here; the programme is still available on the RINA web site, for those wishing to find the list of papers.
