A new system developed by the Danish noise and vibration specialist Odegaard & Dannieskiold-Samsoe (ODS) for vibration surveys and troubleshooting was pioneered on post-Panamax container ships but is now being promoted for many other types of vessel. This Omega concept uses the multi-channel principle (covering up to 128 channels), which up to now has had a number of limitations although used successfully to study complicated ship vibration problems in a large number of hull positions. This may be combined with precise monitoring of a propeller, main engine, and propeller shaft. One of the most important limitations was that the extensive data processing for detailed frequency and mode shape analysis had to be undertaken in a laboratory after return from sea trials. Cost and manpower requirements were substantial, and several weeks could pass before it was possible to reach conclusions. The new Omega equipment provides quick availability of measurement results and is claimed as a major advance. Advanced DAT equipment is used for maximum storage capacity with reliable, high-precision recording. Furthermore, a PC-based signal-processing system carries out real-time FFT analysis of the recorded signals.
