The following article, based on a paper by Eun-Chan Kim, Chang Doo Koh, Chun-Ju Lee, Sun Young Kim, and Yoon-Rak Choi, from the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, (KRISO), Korea, discusses the outcome of an interesting concept design, hydrodynamic performance, and economic analysis of object routes for an unusual 30knot 340TEU high-speed feeder container ship. To maintain stability with all containers being loaded on the upper deck, a watertight trunk on the side of the upper deck, and a special green water exhausting system were adopted. For various hull forms, a series of model tests and calculations were conducted to determine the resistance, propulsion, seakeeping, and manoeuvring performances. Considering the high speed, for which the Froude number at the design speed is approximately 0.4, a displacement monohull was adopted. All the seakeeping and manoeuvring characteristics satisfied design criteria. According to the economic analysis, expected values of the required freight rate were compared.
