LNG reliquefaction, in spite of the traditional obstacle of cost, may well be on the verge of finally becoming a reality. Robbie Sillars, senior surveyor, Lloyd's Register EMEA, provides an overview of the technology, standard configurations, and challenges to overcome. Eliquefaction systems have been fitted to the majority of classed liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers. The machinery required is relatively simple and energy efficient. Small LPG ships, less than 5000m~3, are normally fully pressurised and do not need a reliquefaction system.
