Offshore oil and gas fuel Krylov work

The world-famous Krylov Institute in St Petersburg, Russia - traditionally very active in model testing and R&D in marine and associated fields - is working especially hard in today's optimistic economic climate where natural resources for export from this vast country are enjoying a much higher profile than in previous years, writes Tim Knaggs. Offshore activities are chiefly centred on three regions: Sakhalin (in the Russian Far East), the Arctic coast (mainly towards the western end), and the Caspian Sea. Central themes of all three areas are austere winters, with an abundance of ice. A fourth region is the Gulf of Finland, where the ice conditions are slightly less harsh; this area is, however, of great strategic importance for Russia, since the main export terminals for Russian piped oil from land fields, eg, Primorsk, are located here.
