Record bunker fuel prices and more restrictive pollution controls mean that merchant shipowners value fuel efficiency as never before. A first order has been placed for the new Promas rudder/bulb and hubcap combination that promises significant fuel savings. High on the agenda of Rolls-Royce's expanding offering to the merchant sector is its capability to develop fuel efficient, pollution-reducing technology for shipowners. As a developer of ship designs and a supplier of equipment packages, the company's commitment stretches from the hydrodynamic modelling that facilitates greater hull through water efficiency, to low NOx and CO_2 engines, and to higher efficiency of propeller and rudder designs. One fruit of the holistic approach to these design challenges is the development of the new Promas (Propulsion manouevring system) solution, developed over four years, and drawing on all of the group's competencies in hydrodynamics, ship design, and equipment development.
