Italian shipyard group Rodriquez Cantieri Navali and Genoa-based classification society RINA have jointly developed an innovative and environmentally friendly high-speed ferry codenamed ALISWATH. The project is the result of a ?16 million research and development project partially supported by the Italian Ministry of Research, which started in 2002, aiming at developing a craft designed for high speed passenger transportation with high environmental and safety performance while achieving a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Also involved in the project was the University of Genoa and the Krylov Institute of St. Petersburg where tank tests were carried out.
