In todays global market, engineers are pushed to find better, faster, and more affordable solutions. With advancements in technology, paired with the paradigm shift from plan-based deliverables to model-based deliverables, engineers are turning toward digital project delivery. Digital project delivery uses digital methods to capture data and analyze it throughout the project lifecycle to facilitate integrated planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations. In transportation and infrastructure, these assets can include roadways, utilities, bridges, tunnels, dams, buildings, facilities, or asset databases. The crux of digital project delivery is to collect data from digital sources at the beginning of a project, such as survey, GIS devices and databases, and existing models, then build upon this data throughout the lifecycle with minimal data loss and rework. Digital project delivery has been adopted by the building community to a level of standardization, but in the transportation sector the concept is still evolving as industry adapts to the insurgence of big data, the Internet of Things, 5G, and new hardware and software.
