Geographic information systems (GIS) are having a significant impact on a broad range of environmental operations at military installations and other government facilities. Once viewed as primarily database archives for data with spatial attributes and excellent mapping tools, improvements in information technology have made GIS capabilities more accessible and less expensive. Because of that, GIS applications in the environmental arena are diverse, are changing rapidly, and are increasingly preferred by environmental professionals and decision makers. Most applications involve the integration or fusion of relevant spatial data, the linkage of predictive models to GIS, the coupling of GIS to decision support systems, or some combination of these.
