ARMY Environmental Programs

The Army must conduct realistic training ― and sustain its training ― as it would fight. Equally, the Army must continue to be a good steward of the environment. The Army Environmental Center (USAEC) integrates environmental realities into programs that maximize the Army's capabilities to train. The tasks involved are immense in scope and importance. The Army manages 14 million acres of land with hundreds of posts, installations and training sites. The land supports 1.2 million people and is host to approximately 153 endangered species. In the past 25 years, environmental restoration has completed roughly 83 percent of its total program goals. Of approximately 12,000 sites identified in the United States and its territories, the Army has completed a response on more than 10,000. The remaining sites are on track for completion by 2014. The sooner we clean up our lands, the sooner the Army can focus more resources on its primary mission of readiness. We must plan for and carry out our responsibilities to enhance both our stewardship of the environment and the Army's capabilities to train as it would fight.
