Researchers in the Polymer Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering, along with others from Resilient Technologies and Cooper Tire, have developed a state-of-the-art, non-pneumatic tire (NPT) prototype for military vehicles. The NPT, which has been under development for more than two years, provides better mobility, range, functionality and reliability and requires less maintenance than a standard military run-flat tire. The airless tire does not rely on the traditional tire-and-rim design, but instead uses a unique rim, honeycomb and tread package that eliminates the need for the cavity that typically contains air in a traditional tire.
