Performance-based Munitions Response

The former Fort Miles Military Reservation, located at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, is today part of Delaware's Cape Henlopen State Park. Under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) program and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), the former military reservation underwent a remedial action in early 2008 to address potential munitions and explosives of concern (MEC). Located in Lewes, Del., the former military reservation initially served as a coastal defense site at the onset of World War II, when coastal batteries and gun emplacements were camouflaged among the coastline dunes. Through the 1950s, the installation housed several small-arms ranges and a rocket range that provided training areas for a cadre of troops. Today, as a state park, the site is used for a variety of recreational activities and is home to the Great Dune, which rises 80-ft above sea level and is the highest sand dune between Cape Hatteras, N.C., and Cape Cod, Mass.
