Materials underpin much of civil and military engineering technology. Materials control the weight, strength, maintainability and required logistical support for forward/austere basing, in-theater roads and protective systems-as well as the design of locks, dams, pumping systems and breakwaters. It is hard to overstate the importance of materials to engineering and to the nations infrastructure.
