It seems fitting to begin 2013 by showcasing some groundbreaking technologies. The first topic is a summary of some fairly sophisticated work that is leading to new materials with remarkable capabilities. It is fairly fundamental research and I include it as a glimpse into the future of an area that could impact the broad spectrum of capabilities needed for civil and military engineering.
