The Alphabet and Math of Sustainability Certification

Current laws and executive orders require all new federal facilities to meet a comprehensive set of requirements commonly referred to as the Federal High Performance and Sustainable Building Guiding Principles, which was renamed in 2016 as the Guiding Principles for Sustainable Federal Buildings. For the Department of Defense (DOD), these requirements have been consolidated into Unified Facilities Criteria 1-200-02, High Performance and Sustainable Building Requirements. A Sustainable Buildings Policy Memorandum (November 2013) reinforces the requirements and states: "A building that meets the UFC (1-200-02) requirements shall be considered compliant with the requirements of law and the Guiding Principles."
