Many items of portable electrical and electronic equipment now use lithium batteries. There are many advantages flowing from this new battery technology - but also some associated risks. The lithium battery in its many forms can be susceptible to overheating, thermal runaway and catching fire - possibly through shorting, internal faults, inappropriate charging, being of counterfeit origin, or due to damage sustained during use or repair. The risks are well understood; hence the ICAO Dangerous Goods (DC) regulations stipulate many controls and requirements which must be observed for the carriage of lithium batteries in the holds of commercial aircraft.
