Aircraft are far more than the sum of their parts, but individual parts can, as a last resort, be more valuable than the aircraft. After succumbing to constantly fluctuating forces - recessions, fuel price, fleet ageing, stringent regulation and competing models - older, inefficient types are stripped for compatible parts to preserve existing fleets. Without support from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), parts must either be bought new or - given the robust design, servicing intervals and serial number traceability - sourced second-hand. If parts or the type have been discontinued, there will be an ongoing need for a rolling stock of components.
