Durham County is a mixed rural and urban authority that formerly comprised a thriving mining industry. This gave rise to a number of small communities, scattered around the County. As a consequence, many street lighting units in these communities, are mounted directly on the electricity company's overhead distribution network poles - the preferred method of electrical distribution in such locations. A proportion of the street lighting units in the County are mounted on Council-owned and maintained overhead networks - but the majority of the lighting is more conventional, with lighting units mounted on lighting columns and supplied via electricity company and private underground cable networks.
