The Appropriate Use of Heritage Luminaires

'Heritage' fittings are still a popular solution for local authorities in many of our older towns and city centres -the assumption being that historic architecture is best complemented by period-style lighting units. But electric lighting is a technology of the last 120 years, so one could argue that unless the historic setting is late Victorian or Edwardian, any sense of real authenticity is a nonsense. Certainly, in France and other European countries, lighting specifiers have no problem with contemporary luminaires in many types of historic location. In my view it can work with great success - and Pete Lummis argues a similar case on pages 24-29.
