Until recent years, lighting engineers have had little direct knowledge of how their lighting infrastructure is functioning, in terms of lamp, control gear and photoelectric cell performance. In fact, the only ways of alerting the engineer to failures was complaints by the general public, routine night inspections and random on site visits. During recent years, a small number of companies have endeavoured to develop remote intelligent management systems, in an effort to provide the engineer with a facility to monitor actual on site performance. A number of different options have been considered, and subsequently utilised - these range from signal transmission via mains cables and low power radio technology, and the use of open or closed protocols.
