Lamp Recycling in the UK - Progress and Problems

We are all concerned with providing high quality and environmentally sustainable lighting, but energy reduction is only one part of the problem. The lighting industry also has a responsibility to the broader environment and needs to ensure that all end-of-life gas discharge lamps (GDLs) are disposed of in accordance with the WEEE regulations. Nearly two million tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is discarded every year in the UK - and until recently much of it ended up in landfill. In July 2007 the 2002 EU Directive on WEEE, designed to minimise the amount of hazardous waste going to landfill and to encourage re-use and recycling, became UK law.
