One of the more highly deserved wins at this year's Lighting Design Awards was the architectural lighting scheme for Regent Street by Studio 29 (see Lighting Journal January), which topped the Exterior Lighting category. More than 20 years in the making, it also reflects the radical developments in techology in that time, spanning the transition from traditional to solid state lighting.Talk to any lighting designer and they will list the drawbacks of LEDs,from cost through to colour instability. But as the awards consistently demonstrate, aside from street lighting and office lighting, they are now pivotal to most projects and, tellingly, specified for the most opulent environments.
