Lighting in Historic Buildings: The Conflict between Historic Integrity and Modern Standards

It is easy to forget the incredible advances in lighting that have been made over the past two hundred years. During that period we have virtually seen the end of two basic forms of lighting and the birth of a 20th century form of lighting. And during the latter half of the 20th century in the Western world, there has been an almost exponential growth in the human expectation of performance from lighting schemes. It is that growth of human expectations that potentially conflicts with what a historic building can sensibly be expected to achieve.
