Bob Sheriff Getting a better picture

In the mind of most geophysicists, Sheriff means: 1. Author of the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Exploration Geophysics. 2. Official of a shire or county... in that order. Had Robert E. Sheriff done nothing else of note, his niche in the geophysical pantheon would be assured on the dictionary's merit alone. Its evolution from a primal in-house glossary to the first edition in 1973 followed by an SEG record of sales and translations, is already a story in itself (TLE, April 1991), "How in the world I came to write the Encyclopedic Dictionary" by the author himself.
