Gynecologic cancer patients suffer more from climacteric symptoms than other women. Hormone therapy should be handled carefully until there is evidence that it is safe and does not effect overall survival.Considering alternative therapy options, one has to bear in mind that in placebo-controlled studies up to 30% of patients in the placebo-group experienced relief in the main symptoms of hot flushes and sleep disturbances.Therapeutic effects exceeding those of placebos were demonstrated with newer antidepressants, such as venlafaxin, using randomized studies.Nevertheless, the therapy for climacteric complaints should be tailor-made, as well as being evidence-based on prospective and randomized studies. It should also be based on the patient's informed consent. The goal of the treatment is to optimize the patient's subjective experience of quality of life while integrating objective oncologic aims.
