Submitted by Arthur Feigenbaum (via WFS.org): Unlike other organisms and animals, humans have the ability to expand their carrying capacity when they reach what would seem like a population limit under existing ecological and technological paradigms. They expand their carrying capacity by creating new technologies that allow them to extract more energy from the ecology and thereby increase their numbers. This has been true for most of our history and prehistory. I don't see why we shouldn't be able to increase our carrying capacity again and again in the future.
