A well structured water treatment regime and good practice can ensure efficient and safe operation of evaporative condensers without corrosion or scaling, Robert Macleod-Smith of Baltimore Aircoil advises. Evaporative condensers have long been an energy efficient means of rejecting heat from refrigeration systems. However, in recent years, concern about Legionella bacteria in the water within evaporative condensers has, in many cases, resulted in inappropriate water treatment that, while aimed at killing the bacteria, often damages the condenser itself. The aim of this article is to explain how evaporative condensers can be safely operated without the risk of Legionellosis or premature scaling and corrosion.
