Investing and making money: the economics of innovation

Why does a company innovate? Because it has to, and to make money, writes Dr Breffni Tomlin, Operations Director at the NITM, UCD. It is hard to imagine a company that could survive, let alone grow, by doing the same thing forever. Companies are constantly making changes to their manufacturing or business processes. This is innovation, even if the company doesn't think of itself as innovative. These innovations are often done by the operating arm of the company, without involving anything called R&D.
