NEED TO UPSKILL INCREASES SHARPLY -ENGINEERS IRELAND CPD SYMPOSIUM

The competition of the future will be the competition for human capital and to be successful in this crucial contest, Ireland will need to upskill 500,000 people through either education or training. That was one of the underlying messages of the 2008 CPD Symposium held recently at the Stillorgan Park Hotel Dublin. A record number of delegates from CPD accredited organisations attended. Delegates reported an excellent learning experience, hearing informative and challenging presentations from a number of expert speakers on the key competitive challenges facing the country. The Symposium was addressed by the then President elect, now Engineers Ireland President, Dr Jim Browne. He warned that long-term and sustainable competitiveness depends critically on our ability to be smart and agile. An advantageous corporate tax regime is clearly very important, as is a young and enthusiastic workforce but of themselves these are unlikely to provide the source of long term competitiveness. "Ultimately our success depends on the quality and the excellence of our workforce and our ability to be responsive to ever changing demands. We need to be smart and agile.
