UCD - the graduates of 1958

In the year when Engineers Ireland celebrates it 175th anniversary and the profession is even more acutely aware of its great traditions and the achievement of previous generations, Ivan Hammond (pictured above in the second row, far left) shares his recollections of some of his fellow UCD engineering graduates of 1958. The year was unique for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was thelast year of the combined degree of mechanical and electrical engineering in UCD, before the two were split into different courses. As a result of this, Dr Freddie Lewis who was in charge of first year retired. He was a unique man, who always insisted that he came from 'East' Donegal and was a Methodist lay preacher in the church on St Stephen's Green (since closed).
