摘要

In his opening address to conference delegates in the Tullamore Court Hotel, Co. Offaly, Dr Browne, also President of NUI Galway, acknowledged that, while international concerns for Ireland's economic difficulties were understandable, the country was well-equipped to make a robust recovery and our situation was simply not comparable to the acute structural problems faced in the 1980s. "The most pessimistic predictions of unemployment will still see 1.8m people at work in Ireland at the end of this year. This compares with a figure of just over 900,000 in the early 1980s. Much of our infrastructure has been transformed in the past 20 years. Our road infrastructure, while not perfect, is greatly improved."
