Minister Micheal Martin's National Taskforce on Obesity at the Department of Health and Children is providing a new impetus to the debate on commuting choices and sedentary lifestyles. Add to this the record high oil prices, continued negative impacts of traffic congestion, as well as the increasingly topical issue of travel independence for school students, and we can see why bicycles are back on the traffic engineer's menu. But while local authorities are now busy setting targets for increased cycle usage, what policies will really prompt the shift in travel modes?
