On joining the academic staff of DIT, Bolton Street, I was quickly made aware of the challenge of making 'management' lectures useful and stimulating, if not exactly entertaining, to students. Since the 1980s, construction management - and construction productivity generally - has been greatly influenced by developments in sub-contracting, technology and in interdisciplinary teamwork. Up until then, many building contractors directly employed most of the construction site operatives and sites teemed with workers. Specialisation started in earnest then and developments in construction productivity and technology, in plant and equipment, accelerated at a pace never experienced before.
