River dances to new climate tune-responding to flood challenge

The river Shannon, from Lough Allen to Killaloe is a slow flowing river, meandering through a network of lakes, bogs and callows. Its average gradient over this 205km distance is one in 12,000. Over the last century and a half, it has been heavily modified, initially for the purpose of navigation (late 19th century) and then in the 1920s, to provide hydro-electricity for the rural electrification scheme.
