The Lagan Weir is made up of five flap gates, each 20 metres long, fixed to reinforced concrete structures supported by steel piles driven 35 metres below the river bed into solid rock. It includes such features as computerised remote monitoring, a service gallery under the river Lagan, two fish passes, a visitor centre and provision for removing deoxygenated salt water. Great care has gone into the visual appearance of the weir and in 1994, at the British Construction Awards, it received a Special Commendation for Excellence in Urban Regeneration for its 'boldness and sensitive execution'.
