The chief executive officer of Forfas, Martin Cronin, Chartered Engineer, in launching the new strategy document emphasised that Ireland has strengths in the software, e-learning and wireless sectors both in terms of enterprise base and specialist research activity in the third level sector. However, he cautioned that for the digital content industry to realise its potential for economic and employment growth will require resolving a number of key competitiveness issues. In particular Cronin pointed to the need for higher levels of R&D activity in both enterprises and in the third level sector, to addressing funding limitations for emerging and developing companies and to the availability of required broadband services and infrastructure.
