Engineers must be more strident in their representations to government, according to Senator Feargal Quinn, the keynote speaker at the fourth annual Engineers Ireland CPD Symposium, a senior level, strategic event for CPD Accredited companies which took place last month at the Radisson SAS St Helen's Hotel, Stillorgan, Dublin. Senator Quinn stated: "If we are to build a solid technological backbone to the Ireland of tomorrow, we need a sizeable number of young people to choose science-related and engineering subjects to study. In short, the country will need more geeks, many, many more than we have now. "The reality, however, is that the supply is drying up, not expanding as it should be - as we need it to be. In today's party society, fewer and fewer young people are prepared to embrace what they see as 'hard subjects'. Hard subjects like mathematics, the foundation for any pursuit of disciplines related to science and engineering."
