Fighting for growth - Weighing up Ireland's 'competitiveness balance-sheet

According to the National Competitiveness Council's Annual Competitiveness Report 2006 realising the Irish economy's growth potential of five per cent per year to 2010 will require a stronger expansion of the exporting sectors of the economy. Ireland's ability to recover some of its lost export competitiveness will partly depend on international developments out of Ireland's control - the evolution of interest rates, exchange rates and global economic imbalances, such as the large U.S. current account deficit. It will also depend on the domestic environment for exporting companies in Ireland.
