With reference to the article entitled 'Defence review should trigger Trident debate' (The Engineer, 16 August), a number of issues emerge that question the validity of the approach being made to defend the UK.rnFor example, having the so-called 'nuclear deterrent' had little, if any, benefit in dealing with the Falklands War or the first Gulf War where, in both cases, an invasion had taken place and, when the aggressors faced armed forces with nuclear capability, this failed to act as a deterrent, possibly as the aggressors realised that for the UK armed forces, and its allies, to resolve these invasions meant that using nuclear weapons was not appropriate.
