The recent space-based film Gravity has highlighted the challenges of communications in hostile environments - and the consequences when things go wrong. While the spotlight has been placed firmly on the challenges of creating robust technology for use in space, similar challenges are seen in the underwater environment. There are many interesting parallels between the challenges facing space communications engineers and those facing their contemporaries in submarines. As in space, there are multiple environmental limitations when submerged, driving the requirements for advanced preparation, training and technology used to equip submariners.
