Using a technique known as two-photon lithography, the Nottingham team hopes to pioneer the production of nanoscale multifunctional components. Tucked away in a quiet side room of Hague's laboratory, a technique is under development that could enable the production of functional 3D components that are smaller than a grain of sand.
