Duke chases more gas growth with pricey purchase of Piedmont

Looking for fresh growth with an even deeper push into natural gas operations, Duke Energy announced Monday it would pay $4.9 billion to buy Piedmont Natural Gas, a major gas distributor in the Caroli­nas and Tennessee that also has significant gas storage and interstate pipeline assets, including major interests in projects to bring Marcellus Shale gas to new markets.
