Ireland unveils plans for waste incineration tax

The Republic of Ireland intends to introduce an incineration tax of up to €38 per tonne of waste from 2011, the country's environment minister announced in November. The tax has been mooted since the 2007 elections when the Green Party became part of the country's coalition government. The party believes a tax is needed to ensure recyclable material does not get sent for incineration. Minister John Gormley said the tax would be €20 to €38 per tonne (￡18-34/t).
