HATFIELD BROMATE RULING CONTESTED

Two companies told to pay for groundwater remediation near Hatfield in Hertfordshire are contesting the ruling. The environment department (DEFRA) ordered Crest Nicholson and Redland Minerals to pay for the interim treatment of groundwater contaminated with bromate and bromide in July following a public inquiry (ENDS Report 415, pp 22-23). Thames Water and Veolia Water Three Valleys have been pumping and treating the water since 2005 to try to stop a 20-kilometre plume of the pollutants spreading further. It has already affected both firms' water supplies.
